This picturesque island is located across the Caliboque Bay from Hilton Head and is only accessible by boat. Steeped in history and still very much unspoiled, the Island was used as the setting in Pat Conroy's novel, "The Water is Wide." Visit the one-room Island Elementary School, the First Union Baptist Church, circa 1880 and the Mary Dunn Cemetery with gravestones dating back to the late 1790's. If you don't have a boat, you can contact any number of tour companies for tour information and costs.
